Really Ar? Again?- Call for Speakers!!
Theme: Masterplanning
date to be determined
Hot on the heels (well, if you’re looking at time in the more drawn-out scale of things) of the first Really Ar?, a pecha-kucha inspired showcase of thematically-relevant projects, comes the second session.
Held in an informal setting, in which we invite a few people with interesting ideas to present to an audience of young architects, the objective of the Really Ar? sessions is to promote exchange of good ideas.
This will be our second such event. (The first Really Ar was held at the end of January this year, and attracted about 40-50 people.)
Our format is to have three speakers present for 15 minutes each, after which there will a Q&A session. Each presentation is hoped to be presented in a succinct manner - a single project, or a single idea, with an emphasis on the thought processes behind the product.
Theme and Call for Speakers
We are looking for speakers to present interesting designs, built and unbuilt. We are looking for ideas that are intelligent, fresh and distinctive. The projects need not be large in scale, but hopefully groundbreaking and radical in some way.
The theme for Really Ar? Again? is ‘Masterplanning’. We chose this theme as many Singaporean and Singapore-based firms have been invited to do grand masterplans for other countries, but ironically, aren’t given the same autonomy to plan their own home country. As such, few people really see the fruit of their labour.
If you would like to share your firm’s work, or your personal ideas, work and research, or simply nominate someone, do contact us. Suggestions on other topics are much welcome for future Really Ar? sessions.
One more thing - fancy poster coming soon.
Really Ar . 01
Design Sharing Session
31 Jan 2008 @ Night and Day Bar
“Really Ar?” Local, contextual and also a play on the words, Really Architecture! It’s inquisitive, dynamic, and has an addictive ring to it. For those of you who need a crash course on the nuances of the Singlish language, the word “ar” normally spelled “arh” is commomly uttered at the end of a question to express enlightenment, as in
“This building was built by Foster.”
................................................................."Really arh?”
When exclaimed out loud, it can also be taken to express astonishment or disbelief, as in
“The new national stadium is going to look like tissue paper.”
..............................................................."Really arh?!”
(Of course we now know that it will be a bald headed dome instead.)
And so our first session of Really Ar? came and went. In all, I must say we were quite pleased at the turn out, though it is still a constant struggle trying to get some serious discussion about issues started. I guess it’s just the mood that people are in after a long day’s work. Still, it is a start! The next time we do this, we will probably have a more specific theme and find speakers accordingly. That would help steer the discussion a lot more.
Thanks to all the people who came to share with us your projects - Adib, Wai Hon, Ker How and Lin Hao. It was most enjoyable. Our gratitude goes especially to Randy who allowed us the use of his place and for supporting us in such an initiative. You have our heartiest appreciations! Of course, also to all who turned up, we hope it was at least remotely meaningful for you. Do let us know how we can improve in the coming sessions!
Enjoy the rest of the photos!
Architect in a bottle
Possibility Room + Courtyard, National Library (level 5)
Sat 10 June 2006, 6pm
The role of architects in any society has to be constantly evaluated and re-evaluated, in the light of changing economies, technologies and political structures. Very often, the architect defies just the role of ‘designer of buildings’, and has to dabble with a myriad range of specialisations – engineering, art, archaeology – and would thus have to take on the role of a Renaissance Man of sorts. Is this the case for architects – and architecture – in Singapore? Are architects in Singapore confined to a field of expertise so specific that it becomes oblivious, if not irrelevant, to community? Does the Singapore architect place himself in a proverbial bottle, by commodifying design and selling it to only certain classes of society? Is his role so specialised that his profession becomes incomprehensible, or even ignored, by non-architects?
This forum will be held on Saturday 10 June 2006 at 6pm at the level 5 Possibility Room + Courtyard, National Library.
